Dear All,

As it has only received a brief mention to my friends on Facebook, you probably aren't aware that we have been looking (for about six months) for a building to lease for use as a permanent JSA dojo.

Well, it looks like the search is over!

We have found a chap who is willing to lease out part of his warehouse which he intends to use for archive storage, and using a mix of bribing, begging, cajoling, lying and threatening, we have secured the front 2500 square feet for our dojo for not a great deal more than we would pay to hire a similar size of sports hall each week. While it is not 100% set in stone yet (we are still have to have legal bods look over the lease agreement etc), it looks like this is going ahead.

Anyway, to keep interested parties 'in the know', I have set up a blog so you can RSS/subscribe/visit/whatever and see how we're getting on!

We have uploaded some photos of the building as it is now, and also some renderings of what it will look like once we have it all JSA'ed up! Your thoughts, opinions and ideas would be highly appreciated at this early stage of planning. We have no doubt missed something out in our design process!

Here's the blog:

http://heijoshin.wordpress.com

From Russ Johnson, Sensei email: rjohnson76401@earthlink.net

Hi Jim Sensei,

I hope all things are going well for you. I wanted to check with you on something. I have had an urgent financial situation come up and I am needing to raise some cash as soon as possible. I have exhausted most of my means and am looking at possibly having to sell some of the books in my collection. I hate to do it but it's just one of those things. I know that you have an idea of the value and scarcity of these and might be able to point me in the right direction or spread the word to any who might be interested.

I have some copies of the books from Morio Higaonna's 4-part series, some are first editions. I saw a set of these just went for almost $400 on ebay, and I have seen them go for lots higher than that. I also have his History of Karate book. I have a copy of Bishops History book signed by Matayoshi Sensei, and I have some copies of Toguchi Sensei's Essence of Karate books, volumes 1 and 2. These are the later ones and not the orange and green ones from Ohara. Volume 2 is very hard to find and is in English and Japanese. Some of these are signed by him.

If you might be interested, or know somebody who is, I would sure appreciate you spreading the word. If possible, I would like for them to go to somebody who can appreciate them as much as I have. But I can't be too picky right now. I am trying to avoid sticking them on ebay for just anybody, plus the fees there are pretty steep.

Hope to hear back from you soon. Take care,

Russ

Please RESPOND directly to Russ-san,

An unknown risk stop (KEEP IN MIND ALL CONTACTS ARE UNKNOWN RISK). A red-light violation, turned possible operating under the influence, turns to a deadly assault and use of deadly force engagement all in about 30 seconds from contact to shots fired.

You cannot see the suspect in this video until the gun pops out the window and threatens the officers life. Listen to the initial conversation however and the response to the question, Officer; How much have you had to drink tonight? Answer: PLENTY! Officer; How much? Answer; Gun comes out the window!

My opinion on the answer, PLENTY is its out of the normal pattern of behavior, even for a possible drunk. Most do not respond in that way. If listened to closely it is an F--- YOU answer??? A SUBTLE SIGN OF CONTEMPT! A fraction of a second later the suspect is trying to kill a cop! (your thoughts on this I am intersected in!)

Note the reactions of the officer. The initial OH SHIT MOMENT! (which the officer actually states out loud) too directing the gun away, too what appears to be a fraction of a second of disbelief (frequently occurs in all of us) on the part of the officer until the adversaries gun was fired. Then we get movement out of the line of fire, while calmly drawing and then accurately shooting the suspect. The fast transients take place fast, in fractions of seconds in this case allowing the officer to WIN! .

Some other lessons we should learn and apply

* Superior situational awareness (BOYD CYCLE)
o Condition your awareness and decision making capabilities…make it a priority
* Approach and positioning…ALWAY TAKE THE POSITION OF ADVANTAGE
o Stay back from the window
* Observe the hands that can hurt you!

The officer stays mentally calm, very calm and his reactions led to fast transient maneuvers that led to his ability to stop this suspect.

Learn from the history of successful battles.Your first actions should deny victory to the enemy. You pay attention to your enemy to find the way to win.You alone can deny victory to the enemy.Only your enemy can allow you to win.~The Art of War 4:1.1-5

You never no who,why or when someone motivated to do so, will attempt to take your life. Watch this video several times. The threats to law enforcement and security continue to evolve [see:
with more highly trained, dedicated and motivated adversaries. Continue to learn, unlearn and relearn! If you observe any other lessons please let me know.

Stay Oriented!

Fred
[/quote]

Comments are not mine but from the website.
But I certainly agree with the comments!!:

"A horrible tragedy. But I am not sure they are making the right decision here" from the web site:.

http://www.policeone.com/training/articles/127313/

"AUSTIN, Texas- The Texas Department of Public Safety said it will no longer train police officers with a boxing drill that resulted in a recruit's death last year.

The department suspended full-contact fighting after Jimmy Ray Carty Jr. died of head injuries last May. He was knocked to the ground at least twice by blows to the head.

"We are confident we will find ways to train them that will keep them safe and keep the people of the state of Texas safe," department spokeswoman Tela Mange said Wednesday.

The agency used the drill for at least 30 years and had argued it was useful training for officers who must be prepared to fight on the streets.

But consultants hired by the department after Carty's death recommended the drill be eliminated because it caused too many head injuries and did not involve realistic situations.

The department also banned all other exercises that involve hitting or other hard contact between trainees."

"Given that many police officers face physical conflict every day, I'm not sure that removing all "live" training is a good idea. Many aspects of combat cannot be imparted without resistance. I mean, should CPR be not taught if someone gets injured? Accidents are bound to happen.

With all due respect to the dead cadet. Not trying to minimize the heartache of the family involved."
